Bed Bug Identification is Critical

           Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are often mistaken for other bugs. So, it’s important that you know that it is bed bugs that you are dealing with.

Adult bed bugs are easily seen with the naked eye. They are reddish brown in color, flat (before a blood meal), and approximately 1⁄4 inch in length. The female can lay a few hundred eggs in her lifetime of many months to around a year. The eggs are similar to the size of a poppy seed, pearl white, translucent and are attached to surfaces by a sticky substance.

Unless you have exceptional eyesight or a magnifying glass, their eggs are not very visible to the human eye. Depending on temperature and conditions, these eggs can hatch anywhere from three to ten days or longer. Once the eggs hatch, and the young bed bug is exposed, it searches for a blood meal for survival.

After feeding, they will return to their hiding place, digest their food and deposit fecal stains [poop]. It then outgrows and sheds its skin and searches for another blood meal. They grow through five [5] of these stages which take approximately 6 weeks before becoming a breeding adult. Bed bugs life survival time is debatable and is completely dependent upon regular blood meals and suitable environments.

Where Bed Bugs Come From

           Bed Bugs

First, don’t blame yourself or be ashamed or embarrassed that you got bed bugs. Bed bugs are so efficient at hitchhiking that anyone can get them. They don’t care if you’re rich or poor or whether your house is clean or dirty.

Bed bugs travel via people’s clothing, luggage, personal items and furniture. Either you, a family member or a visitor can introduce them in your home. And if you live in a shared wall environment like an apartment, they can travel in the walls and spread. They only want your blood and easily adapt to any environment that has a constant blood supply for them to feed on.

           Common Control Mistakes

Homeowners who use off the shelf rodenticides at your local hardware store may notice they no longer get the same results they once did, your eyes are not fooling you. New laws have passed over the years to reduce the dosage of active ingredients in consumer products. This was done to prevent the accidental poisoning of non-target animals such as the family dog due to the reckless use of these products by homeowners.

The German cockroach is the most common of cockroaches found throughout the United States. The German cockroach is light brown with two parallel stripes located just behind their heads that reaches down their body. They are oval in shape, have six legs, a long antenna and are approximately 1⁄2″. They can fit through small openings. They are fast breeders and can produce up to six generations per year.

They like to hide in dark, warm, moist, humid places close to food and have been known to eat just about anything. (breads, sweets, meats, starches, gravies, soap, toothpaste, glue and almost any other human or pet food). They can’t go more than a couple of weeks without moisture but can go without eating for up to a month. They find their way into homes and restaurant kitchens by hitching a ride on packaged goods, grocery bags and cardboard boxes. They love a sink full of dirty dishes, food spills on counters, floors, an open bag of chips or dog food. One hundred cockroaches can survive on as little as a dimes worth of spilled oil for over a month.

           Cockroaches

           1. Precaution

These cockroaches pick up parasitic worms, bacteria, and other pathogens while crawling through decaying matter in sewerage lines and spread them on to food or surfaces. They’ve been linked to illness outbreaks, cause allergic reactions in some and can exacerbate asthma.

           2. Prevention

Good sanitation plays an important role in preventing cockroaches. Clean up after you eat. Wash dishes, pots and pans and flat wear. Or rinse dishes of all food and place in dish washer (yes, they can find food on dishes in there). Try to manage the amount of clutter, especially next to warm objects such as the refrigerator motor.

Common areas where you may find inside contamination from mice is in utensil drawers, under kitchen sinks, chewed open pet and human food packages in pantries, storage areas or garages and attics where Christmas decorations and seasonal items are stored. Their urine and fecal droppings contaminates these items and you, or a family member may unknowingly handle these infectious items, or a pet may ingest these.

Mice have very high birth rates and can turn into a breeding ground in a short time. In heavy cases, mice and their offspring’s fecal droppings and urine create a toxic environment. This toxic environment is a health hazard to both humans and pets in a home. When this waste is soaked into wood or drywall it can encourage mold and attract other rats and animals. Over the years, rats and mice have been responsible for spreading serious diseases and illnesses.

Don’t let that cute little face fool you. Like any other insect or pest, mice require a learned process of elimination and control. Don’t be misguided by how “simple” the products on shelves in hardware stores make it look. Removal is a very complicated process that can also be dangerous for homeowners and commercial properties.

Once they find their way into your home or yard, it is important to get them out as soon as possible before they cause extreme damage. Because their front teeth never stop growing, they become non-stop chewing machines to keep them a manageable length. Without constant chewing, their teeth will grow up through the upper roof portion of their mouths causing starvation and death. To satisfy their need to chew and survive, they will chomp their way through anything they can find. Mice can cause a huge amount of environmental degradation and cause severe damage to many parts of your home, attic, yards, storage sheds and vehicles in garages. Unfortunately, much of this damage isn’t visible to you.
